The Pneumatic Reduction for Patients with Intussusception during Infancy and Childhood

Abstract
Intussusception is the most common cause of intestinal obstruction in infancy and early childhood. Almost all patients with intussusception can be reduced by conservative method. During the period between September, 1981 and March, 1983 pneumatic reduction method was employed in 42 cases of intussusception who were admitted to the Department of Surgery, Xyungpook National University Hospital. The results were as follows:
The mean age of the patients was 9 months, and 81.0% of the patients were under the age of 1 year-old.
Males were slightly more affected than females as a ratio of 1.8:1.
The overall successful rate of the pneumatic reduction without anesthesia was 90.5% of 42 cases of intussusception.
The time required for reduction in moat cases was within 3 minutes, average 113 seconds. The gas pressures for reduction in most cases were below 100 mm.Hg. and thought to be lower than those of barium reduction.
The method was simpler and safer thun that of barium enema.
